HI – I’M BRENDA!

LET ME TELL YOU WHY I WANT TO BE YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLOR.

I have an unwavering passion for Muskoka. I have always felt grateful to have grown up here and even though when I was young, I wanted to move away and experience the world, I always saw myself moving back home and making a difference in some way.

I know many are disillusioned with government but I believe in the process and that it can be done in a better and more inclusive way. To me, it’s about creating partnerships, studying other successful models and working with diverse partners to find solutions.

My strongest assets are:

  • building relationships

  • connecting through strong communications; and

  • listening (not hearing but actually listening!)

In my role at the Chamber, I have championed our needs with all levels of government, and I am not afraid to respectfully challenge issues, when necessary. I have built strong relationships with our leaders, community members, business owners and government officials and can work with all political stripes.

What needs to happen:

Your elected members need to be strong advocates for Bracebridge and Muskoka at all levels of government. As municipal and district leaders, we need to have our MP’s and MPP’s ears, and work together seamlessly.

We need more diversity around tables where decisions are being made. Having a District Council that has 18 men to 4 women and a Town Council that has 7 men to 1 woman is unacceptable. Electing more women to the table is just a start - and would still not be enough. We need an assortment of views to make sure we are making the best decisions that represent our whole community. This means we need to be actively recruiting different ages, visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, members from the LGBTQ2S+ community, people with disabilities and more to ensure we are seeing issues through everyone's lens to come up with the best outcome and solutions for all.

I look forward to listening to your thoughts and discussing ideas on how we can continue to move Bracebridge and Muskoka forward in a positive way. Please reach out to me any time!

ABOUT ME

I currently live in Bracebridge with my partner, Joe Rockbrune and my step-son Luke Rockbrune. Luke is with us part time.

I am very blessed that I have my extended family close living in Muskoka. My mom Joanne Rhodes and her partner Steve Rose, My Dad Terry Rhodes and my sister Erin Rhodes. My brother, Lee Rhodes and his wife, Jennifer just had a son, my first nephew, named Heath. Now more than ever, I want to make sure our community is strong as it can be so Heath will have options that youth before him might not have had.

I grew up in Gravenhurst and graduated from both Gravenhurst Public and Gravenhurst High School.

I love the outdoors and cherish Muskoka because it is a beautiful playground for me to explore. I enjoy swimming, hiking and cross country skiing - especially night skiing. I am excited by meditation and mindfulness and the power of your own mind. I am a sports enthusiast but these days I find myself watching more than playing.

I have always been extremely involved in the communities that I have been a part of. I have a deep love for Muskoka - I have always felt grateful that I grew up here and had the opportunity to come back to work, live and play!
